Starting a Skate Ministry
SO, YOU WANT TO START A SKATE MINISTRY... Christian Skaters is a network of skate ministries. Our mission is to serve those who have a burden for the skate culture. Consider us a resource as you begin and continue to minister to skateboarders. Our network of ministries has decades of combined experience in all areas of skate ministry. We have been those out in the parks, skating the demos, discipling youth, etc. We are here to help with everything from prayer, to sample Bible studies, to building ramps, to hosting demos & events. We have all the resources to get you started. Membership is only $25 for individuals and $100 for ministries.
FIRST...Make sure you are called to this! Skate Ministry is a growing trend. Many churches start skate ministries just to be "relevant" and don't really understand (or necessarily like) skaters. Skaters can be unlovable, harsh, unappreciative, etc. They will see right through fluff and expect you to be real. Mark Janetta from Splinter, puts it brilliantly in a story on his sight, "Some people have no idea about skating, just following the rules religiously. It is like confining a graffiti artist with his spray can to a single sheet of paper and expecting him to accept the perimeters you’ve set and still produce a quality piece of art. Don’t tell me how to skate. It kills all enjoyment and creativity that skating produces left to itself. You cannot control creativity, character, perseverance and all the other elements of skating or any other art form. These things are developed not governed. No wonder kids have turned to skating by the millions. They are dying to express themselves as individuals and to be challenged. They want real. They don’t want to be told how, they just want to be a given the chance to try…and just be themselves."
SECOND...Love these skaters. Yeah, they can be tough, but they are passionate & unique. I know that our Lord did not make us to fit in. He wanted us to stand out for Him. If we love these skaters with Christ-like love and are a constant example, they will ask questions and turn that same passion for skate into a passion for the Lord. Skaters have enough faith to believe that a board with wheels will flip and land under their feet after launching off a set of stairs. How much faith could they have in Christ?
THIRD...Be committed. Be consistent. Be transparent. Meet weekly. Pour into their lives. Be a true example of Christ. Many of these kids come from single-family homes. They need to know that you will be there and that they can count on you. We have spent many nights in hospitals. We have helped families move. We have been to weddings and we have been to funerals. Skate ministry does not stop when you close the park or pack up the ramps. It's about building relationships and, in turn, sharing what a relationship with Jesus could look like.
